My mother was from Perth and as a result of having little to no real family in Melbourne i spent many months there whilst Samantha and I grew up. Whilst we were there we would stay in my grandparents home, the house my Mother and Aunty grew up in. The house is a large white building set back in the property with a large (always green) lawn out the front. My Papas bore water system tinted all the walls leading up the stairs to the house a light brown. This orange glow is always the way i remember Perth. My Grandmother was originally from Spain, so the aromas of her cooking filled the house and the racket of my Papas on-the-hour news programs destroyed the silence. Both my Papa and Grandma have large personalities, which at times clash with each other, it isn't rare for my Grandma to scream some broken english insult at my Papa to which my Papa would shrug his shoulders and turn back to his news unfazed. My Papa Jack is one of the people in my life i have always looked up to. He is invincible. In his life he has endured cancers, snake bites, heart attacks, the great depression... and my mum. He is a never ending fountain of advice and probably the strongest, toughest, most intimidating man i know. I know there will be a void in my life once he goes, but hopefully i wont have to worry about that for at least another 20 years. I love them both, very, very much.
